Ashton Agar is an Australian professional cricketer who has sporadically represented his country in the limited-overs formats of the sport (ODIs, T20Is), as a bowling all-rounder. Not considered much for selection in the longest format of the sport due to a strong first-choice bowling attack, he has only played 4 test matches for Australia, as of February 2021, 2 of them quite eventful. He has turned out for Western Australia (2012-13–Present) in Australian domestic cricket and the Perth Scorchers (2013-14–Present) in the Big Bash League (BBL). He has also played for Middlesex County Cricket Club (2018) and Warwickshire County Cricket Club (2019) in the English county cricket circuit.

He had played for his home state of Victoria at both the under-17 and the under-19 level and had impressed at the 2010–11 National Under-17 Championships, picking up 16 wickets at an average of 11.75. He was also selected in the Australian squad for the 2012 ICC Under-19 World Cup but did not get to play a single match in the tournament.
Despite his performances and promise, he was unable to earn selection at the senior level for Victoria which had forced him to move to Western Australia for the 2012–13 season. In just his 2nd Sheffield Shield match, in February 2013, he had scored 53 runs in a state Sheffield Shield record partnership of 94 runs for the 10th wicket.
He had made his Test match debut for Australia in the first test of the 2013 Ashes series. Aged 19 years and 269 days, he had become the youngest Australian since Archie Jackson (1928–29 Ashes) to make his Test debut in an Ashes match. He came in to bat in Australia’s first innings with the score reading an ominous 117/9 but smoked 98 runs in a scarcely believable partnership of 163 runs for the last wicket.
Ashton thus became the first player in the history of the sport to have scored a half-century on debut from the number 11 batting position. He had also set the then-record for the highest partnership for the 10th wicket in a test match.
The fanfare did not last too long though, as he was dropped from the team after the next match as his bowling, the role he was picked for, was not up to the mark, indicated by his figures that read 0/24, 2/82, 0/44, and 0/98. The only silver lining was that he had become the first Australian teenage spinner to take a wicket in a Test match.
The vagaries of team combination and the presence of a strong bowling core meant that he earned a test match recall more than 4 years after his Ashes heroics, in a 2-match series against Bangladesh.
He scored 41 not out in Australia’s first innings in the first test of that series and picked 5 wickets across both innings but his performance was not able to prevent an embarrassing upset, with Bangladesh defeating Australia for the first time in Test cricket. He played in the 2nd test where Australia squared the series but as of February 2021, he had not been given another opportunity to represent Australia in a Test match.
In February 2020, in a T20I match against South Africa, he had become just the 2nd Australian bowler to take a hat-trick (the feat of scalping 3 wickets in 3 successive deliveries) in a T20I match. He had also recorded overall figures of 5/24, his first five-wicket haul in a T20I match.
