Sixto Diaz Rodriguez, known as Rodriguez, is an American singer and songwriter from Detroit, Michigan. Although his career initially met with little fanfare in the United States, he found success in Australia, touring the country twice and New Zealand. Unknown to him for decades, his music has also enjoyed enormous success and considerable influence in South Africa, where he is said to have sold more records than Elvis Presley, as well as in other countries of South Africa. Because information about him is so scarce, there are false rumors that he committed suicide shortly after the release of his second album. In the 1990s, determined South African fans found and contacted Rodriguez, which caused him to unexpectedly resume his music career. This was narrated in the 2012 Oscar-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man and helped to make Rodriguez famous back home.
